Circuit breaker for use in CH load centers. Designed to protect house wire from overheating or causing a short-circuit. Features a trip flag indicator. 120 volt/240 volt, 10,000 AIC (amps interrupting capacity). UL (Underwriter's Laboratories) listed.
Eaton catalog number CHF250 · UPC 786685532172
This is Eaton CHF250, a CH series part. Electrical parts are matched by catalog number rather than by description, so the number on the old part, on the panel label or on the equipment nameplate is the surest way to get the same thing. Order by CHF250 and it is identical.
Circuit breakers
A breaker is specified by four things and all four have to be right: the SERIES, which decides whether it physically fits the panel; the AMPERAGE; the POLE COUNT; and the TYPE, meaning standard, GFCI, AFCI or dual-function. The series and the type are the two that catch people out, and both are decoded below. Amperage is set by the wire and the load, never by what will fit.

Check before you order
- The series stamped inside your panel door
- Amperage, from the circuit and not the socket
- Single-pole, double-pole, duplex or quad
- Standard, GFCI, AFCI or dual-function
- Plug-on neutral or pigtail interior
Protection type: Standard trip
Thermal-magnetic overcurrent protection only, with no arc-fault or ground-fault sensing. The right choice where the code does not call for more, and the wrong one where it does.
Eaton breaker series: BR, CH, CL, BD and BQ
The series is what decides whether a breaker fits, and the series are not interchangeable. The label inside your panel door names the series the interior accepts; if the label is gone, the width of the existing breakers tells you, because BR is a full inch per pole and CH is three quarters. This part is CH series.
BR series — 1 in. per pole
The current residential line, and what most Eaton panels sold in the last twenty years take. Classified to fit a number of other makes as a replacement. Plug-on neutral BR panels let AFCI and GFCI breakers clip on without a neutral pigtail.
CH series — 3/4 in. per pole (this part)
The narrower premium line, and the one Cutler-Hammer panels take. A CH breaker will not seat in a BR panel and a BR breaker will not seat in a CH panel — the widths differ, which is the fastest way to tell them apart. CH is quiet-close and carries a longer warranty.
CL series — 1 in. per pole
The universal replacement line, built to drop into a list of other manufacturers’ panels as well as Eaton BR. Check the classification list on the breaker against the label inside your panel door before ordering.
BD series — 1 in., two circuits per pole
Duplex breakers for BR panels: two independent single-pole breakers in the space of one double-pole position, used to add circuits to a full panel. The panel label states how many duplex positions it allows and where.
BQ series — 2 in., four poles per pole
Quadplex breakers: four poles in two spaces, normally an inner two-pole pair with an outer pair either side. Independent-trip versions let one pair trip without the other. Again, the panel label governs where they may go.
Where Cutler-Hammer fits in
Cutler-Hammer is the name this line was sold under before Eaton acquired it, and panels in the field are still labelled that way. A Cutler-Hammer panel takes CH series breakers, and current Eaton CH breakers are the direct replacement for the Cutler-Hammer ones: same series, same fit, newer part number. If the label on your panel reads Cutler-Hammer, look for CH and not BR.
Single-pole, double-pole, duplex, tandem and quad
A single-pole breaker protects one 120 V circuit and fills one space. A double-pole breaker protects one 240 V circuit and fills two spaces with a shared handle, so both legs open together. A duplex or tandem breaker is two separate 120 V circuits in one space with independent handles: it adds circuits to a panel that has run out of room, and it is not the same thing as a double-pole breaker even though the catalog numbers look similar. A quad is four poles in two spaces. Before fitting a duplex or a quad, read the panel label, because most interiors allow them only in certain positions and some allow none at all.
We stock Eaton, including Cutler-Hammer replacements
Family Hardware is an independent hardware store carrying Eaton BR and CH breakers, load centers, meter sockets, meter-breaker panels, disconnects and the small parts that go with them, from hubs and ground bars to filler plates, for contractors and homeowners alike. If you are replacing a part and are not certain of the series, the catalog number on the old one or the label inside the panel door is enough to match it.
