Dual-function AFCI/GFCI outlets: two kinds of protection in one device
A dual-function outlet combines both protections in a single receptacle. The GFCI half watches for current leaking to ground — the shock hazard near water — and trips in milliseconds. The AFCI half listens for the electrical signature of an arcing fault, the kind produced by a damaged cord or a loose terminal, which is a fire hazard rather than a shock hazard and which a GFCI will not see. Installed as the first device on a circuit, one dual-function outlet protects the receptacles downstream of it, which is often cheaper and simpler than putting a dual-function breaker in the panel.

Choosing the right one
- Wire LINE and LOAD the right way round — reversed, the downstream receptacles are unprotected.
- Test monthly with the on-device test button; self-test models check themselves but the button is the proof.
- Tamper-resistant is required for dwelling-unit receptacles.
- A dual-function outlet at the head of the circuit is the alternative to a dual-function breaker in the panel.
The same protection at the panel
If you would rather protect the whole circuit from the load center, these are the breaker equivalents.
