Shepherd casters: size, mount and wheel, in that order
Three things decide whether a caster fits, and they are independent of each other. The wheel diameter — 1-1/2 In. through 12 In. here — sets how easily it rolls and how high it lifts whatever it is under: a bigger wheel crosses a threshold or a carpet edge that a small one stops at, and it also raises the deck. The mount is either a plate that bolts flat to the underside, or a stem that pushes or threads into a socket in a tube leg; a plate caster and a stem caster of the same size are not interchangeable. The wheel material decides what it rolls on and what it protects: soft rubber and thermoplastic are quiet and kind to a finished floor, polypropylene and cast iron take more weight and more abuse, phenolic and pneumatic are for heavy loads and rough ground. Swivel wheels steer, rigid wheels track straight, and a cart normally wants two of each rather than four swivels. Add brakes on the two swivel corners if the thing is meant to stay put.

Choosing the right one
- Divide the loaded weight by three, not four — on an uneven floor three wheels carry it — and buy above that figure.
- Plate or stem is a fit, not a preference: measure the mounting plate bolt pattern, or the socket bore and thread on a tube leg.
- Bigger wheels roll easier over thresholds and cables, and raise the deck by roughly the wheel diameter.
