Question 1

What sizes of Shepherd Hardware caster wheels does Family Hardware stock?

Accepted Answer

We stock Shepherd Hardware casters in 1-1/2 In., 2 In., 2-1/2 In., 3 In., 4 In., 5 In., 6 In., 8 In., 10 In. and 12 In. wheel diameters, in swivel plate, rigid plate, swivel with brake and threaded stem styles. Small 2 In. and 2-1/2 In. castors suit carts, shop furniture and shelving; 6 In. through 12 In. wheels carry heavy equipment and rolling racks. Tell our Cape Coral or Fort Myers team the load per wheel and the floor surface and we will match the size for you.

Question 2

What is the difference between a plate caster and a stem caster?

Accepted Answer

A plate caster bolts to a flat surface through a square mounting plate and is the usual choice for carts, workbenches and shop furniture. A stem caster pushes or screws into a socket in the leg - Shepherd Hardware makes threaded stem, friction grip and rollerblade stem versions, which are what most office chair casters and furniture casters use. If you are replacing a wheel, bring the old one in and we will match the plate size or stem diameter.

Question 3

Which Shepherd Hardware caster wheel material should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Soft rubber wheels roll quietly and are gentle on tile and hardwood, which makes them the safe default indoors. Polypropylene is inexpensive and handles damp areas. Blue Diamond TPU and polyurethane are non-marking and take more load. Phenolic and cast iron are for heavy loads on smooth concrete, and pneumatic wheels are for rough or uneven ground outdoors.

Question 4

Do you carry casters with brakes, gate wheels and appliance rollers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We stock Shepherd Hardware swivel casters with brake from 2 In. through 5 In., the 4 In. gate caster with adjustable spring bracket (9785) and 5 In. and 8 In. swivel gate casters for sagging or uneven gates, and 25 In. steel appliance rollers (9601) for moving a refrigerator, washing machine or freezer. Spring loaded gate wheels ride over uneven ground so the gate does not drag.

Question 5

What Shepherd Hardware floor protectors work best on tile floors common in Florida homes?

Accepted Answer

For Florida tile floors, Shepherd Hardware self-adhesive felt pads and furniture sliders prevent scratching, and Hi-Tip rubber leg tips cap chair and table legs. Commercial grade heavy-duty felt pads are available in 3/4 In., 1 In. and 1-1/2 In. rounds and in 16, 20, 48 and 96 count packs. Our team at Family Hardware can help match the right protector to your flooring.

Question 6

Accepted Answer

Yes! We ship all Shepherd Hardware products nationwide with free shipping on orders over $99. You can also pick up in-store at our Cape Coral or Fort Myers locations.
