How to Stain Wood Like a Pro
Preparation is Key

Sand progressively: Start with 120-grit and work up to 220-grit for a smooth, even surface that absorbs stain uniformly.
Use pre-stain conditioner: On soft woods like pine, maple, and birch, apply Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to prevent blotchy, uneven color.
Remove dust: Wipe with a tack cloth after sanding to ensure a clean surface before staining.

Application Techniques

Apply with the grain: Use a brush, cloth, or foam applicator and always follow the direction of the wood grain for even coverage.
Wipe excess: After 5–15 minutes, wipe off excess stain with a clean cloth. Longer wait times produce darker color.
Multiple coats: For deeper color, apply additional coats after the previous coat has dried completely.
