Keys We Cannot Cut: Inside-Cut / Sidewinder Keys
Inside-cut keys (also called sidewinder or laser-cut keys) have a wavy groove machined into the flat side of the key blade, rather than traditional cuts along the edge. These require specialized dealer equipment that we do not carry.
Common vehicles with inside-cut keys include certain Lexus, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, and other luxury models. If you are unsure whether your key is an inside-cut, bring it in and we will let you know.

Lock Re-Keying Service
Moving into a new home? Lost a key? Want to make sure old keys no longer work? Lock re-keying changes the internal pins of your existing lock so a new key operates it — without replacing the entire lock hardware. It is faster and more affordable than buying new locks.

Understanding Key Types
Not all keys are the same. Here is a quick guide to the most common key styles and what we can cut.
Single-Cut Keys
The most common key type. Cuts are on one side of the blade only. Used for most house locks, padlocks, and many vehicles.
Double-Cut Keys
Cuts on both sides of the key blade. Common on older cars, some commercial locks, and heavy-duty padlocks.
Tubular Keys
Round keys with cuts around the circumference. Found on vending machines, bike locks, and some display cases.
Inside-Cut / Sidewinder
Wavy groove cut into the flat side of the blade. Found on newer luxury vehicles. Requires specialized dealer equipment.

What types of keys can Family Hardware cut?
We cut a wide variety of keys including standard house keys, padlock keys, mailbox keys, car keys (single-cut and double-cut), motorcycle keys, RV keys, boat keys, cabinet keys, and commercial/business keys. The only keys we cannot cut are inside-cut (sidewinder) keys, which require specialized dealer equipment.
Can you cut car keys at Family Hardware?
Yes, we cut most standard single-cut and double-cut automotive keys for cars, trucks, and SUVs. However, we do not cut inside-cut or sidewinder keys, which are found on some newer vehicles from manufacturers like Lexus, certain Toyota models, and some European brands. If your key has cuts on the side rather than the edge, that is an inside-cut key and would need to be done at a dealership.
Do you cut motorcycle and RV keys?
Absolutely. We cut keys for motorcycles, RVs, campers, and trailers. Bring your existing key or the key code and we can cut a duplicate for you at either our Cape Coral or Fort Myers location.
What is lock re-keying and do you offer it?
Yes, we offer lock re-keying at both locations. Re-keying changes the internal pins of your existing lock so that a new key operates it, without replacing the entire lock hardware. Do I need an appointment for key cutting?
No appointment is needed for key cutting. Just walk into either our Cape Coral or Fort Myers store and we can cut your key on the spot. However, for lock re-keying services, we recommend calling ahead to schedule so we can have a team member dedicated to your project.
What are inside-cut or sidewinder keys?

Can you make a key from a lock if I lost my original?
In some cases, yes. If you bring the lock to our store, our team can often create a key to fit it. For automotive keys without an original, we would need the key code from the manufacturer or VIN. For lock re-keying, we can re-key the lock to work with a brand new key.
