Tax Exempt Purchases
Buying for resale or holding an exemption certificate? Put it on file once and your online orders check out tax free.
Family Hardware collects Florida sales tax on orders shipped to Florida addresses and on in-store pickup orders. If your business buys for resale, or your organization holds a certificate of exemption, you can add that certificate to your account and we'll stop charging tax on your orders. You only have to do it once — the exemption stays on your account for every order after that.
Orders shipped outside Florida are not charged sales tax by us, so an exemption certificate only affects Florida deliveries and pickups.
What You'll Need
Have one of the following handy:
- Florida Annual Resale Certificate for Sales Tax (form DR-13) — for businesses that buy goods to resell or to rent to customers.
- Florida Consumer’s Certificate of Exemption (form DR-14) — for nonprofits, churches, schools, and government agencies.
- Any other valid exemption certificate issued to your organization.
You can submit just the certificate number, just a scan or photo of the certificate, or both. Accepted file formats are PDF (preferred), JPG, and PNG, up to 10MB.
How to Upload Your Certificate
- Sign in to your account. Your exemption is tied to an email address, so use the same account you place orders with. If you don’t have an account yet, creating one takes a minute.
- Open the Tax Exempt page. Click your account icon in the top right and choose Tax Exempt, or go straight to the link below.
- Add your certificate. Enter your exemption number, upload a copy of the certificate, or do both. PDF is preferred; JPG and PNG work too, up to 10MB.
- Submit. That’s it — your account is flagged tax exempt right away and your next order checks out without Florida sales tax.
What Happens Next
Your account is marked tax exempt as soon as you submit, so you don't have to wait to place an order. Our customer service team reviews every submission afterward — if we can't verify the certificate, or we need a clearer copy, we'll email you.
Be sure to sign in before you check out. The exemption follows your account, not your card or shipping address. If you check out as a guest, or with a different email address, sales tax will be charged as normal.
Checking Your Status
The Tax Exempt page in your account always shows what we have on file — your exemption number, a link to the certificate you uploaded, and whether the exemption is active. You'll also see a Tax Exempt badge in your shopping cart where the sales tax line normally appears.
Renewals and Updates
Florida resale certificates are reissued each year, and exemption certificates expire. When you get a new one, return to the same page and submit it — the new certificate replaces the old one on your account. The same goes for a new certificate number, a change of business name, or a corrected copy.
Charged Tax on an Order You Already Placed?
Email us at [email protected] with your order number and your exemption certificate and we'll review it. Getting your certificate on file before you order is always the smoother path.
