Vertical blinds hang from a track at the top and rotate on their own axis, so they stack to one side rather than pulling up. That is what makes them the usual answer for a sliding patio door or a wide picture window — a horizontal blind that wide gets heavy and sags, while verticals carry their weight from the headrail and let you walk through the gap. The vanes tilt for privacy and light the same way a horizontal slat does. Width is the measurement that matters most: the track has to span the opening, and the drop should clear the floor by about half an inch so the vanes swing freely.

- Measure the width of the opening or the area you want the track to span, whichever you are mounting to.
