Leviton plug-on branch breakers: types and what they protect against
Leviton branch breakers plug into a Leviton load center. Beyond the amperage and the pole count, the type decides what the breaker protects against. A standard thermal magnetic breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuit only. A GFCI breaker adds ground-fault protection for people, at the panel instead of at the outlet. An AFCI breaker detects arcing faults — the damaged-cord and loose-terminal failures that start fires — and is what bedroom and living-area circuits are required to carry. A dual-function AFCI/GFCI breaker does both on one circuit. The 2nd Gen smart breakers add per-circuit energy monitoring and remote switching over Wi-Fi.

Choosing the right one
- Amperage must match the wire it protects, never the appliance you wish to run.
- One pole for a 120V circuit, two poles for a 240V circuit — a two-pole breaker takes two panel spaces.
- AFCI for living areas, GFCI for wet locations, dual-function where the circuit needs both.
- Breakers are panel-specific: these are plug-on breakers for Leviton load centers.
- Replacing a breaker means working in a live panel. If that is not routine for you, it is an electrician.
