What Philips ALTO means
ALTO is the Philips low-mercury fluorescent range, marked by its green end caps. It is a fluorescent lamp, not an LED: it needs a working ballast and it is matched by wattage, length and colour temperature. Facilities buyers order it by the case to keep colour consistent across a building.
T8 and T12 linear tubes: what T8 / T12 means
Linear tubes on a medium bi-pin (G13) base. The length and the wiring type are the two things to match: a 4 ft tube is 48 inches, and an LED replacement is Type A (runs on the ballast), Type B (direct wire, ballast removed) or Type A+B (either). The wiring type decides whether an electrician is needed.
