This gate caster with adjustable spring bracket is designed to allow gates to open and close freely. It features a 220 lb. load rating and a spring-loaded clamp that acts as a shock absorber when the caster is rolling over rough or uneven surfaces. It also features a universal mount for wood or metal gates.
Gate casters: the spring-loaded wheel that lets a gate swing over uneven ground
A gate caster carries the outer end of a swinging gate so the hinges do not take the whole weight and the gate does not drag. What makes it a gate caster rather than an ordinary caster is the adjustable spring bracket: the wheel is pushed down onto the ground by a spring, so it rides up over a root, a rut or a slab that has lifted instead of stopping the gate dead. The bracket adjusts for ground clearance and mounts to either a wood or a metal gate frame. Match the load rating to the gate, not to the wheel size.

Choosing the right one
- Measure the gap under the gate at its worst point — that is the travel the spring has to cover.
- The load rating is the weight the wheel carries, which on a swinging gate is roughly half the gate.
- Universal brackets mount to wood or metal; check you can get a driver to the fixings once the gate is hung.
- A flat-free wheel is the choice where the gate sits unused for months at a time.
Ordering more than one
A single gate takes one caster. A pair of drive-through gates takes two, and it is worth buying both at once so the spring tension matches.
