Kitchen Faucet parts guide
Faucet Body & Spout
The faucet itself: the body, the spout the spray head docks into, and the mounting shank under the deck.
Signs it’s failing: Water pooling around the base; Spout swivel leaks; Corroded or dated finish.
Cartridge
The valve inside the body that mixes hot and cold and shuts the water off.
Signs it’s failing: Drips from the spray head; Hard to move or gritty; Water won’t get fully hot or cold.
Handle
The lever that turns the cartridge. Usually held on by a set screw behind a small cap.
Signs it’s failing: Wobbles or spins loose; Stripped splines; Cracked or missing cap.
Aerator
The screen on the face of the spray head that shapes the stream and limits flow.
Signs it’s failing: Low pressure from the spout only; Stream sprays sideways or sputters.
Pull-Down Spray Head
The head that docks in the spout and pulls out on the hose. A button switches stream and spray.
Signs it’s failing: Button sticks between modes; Leaks at the hose connection; Weak or uneven spray.
Sprayer Hose
The flexible hose that runs from the spray head down through the faucet and clicks into the faucet outlet under the sink.
Signs it’s failing: Drips in the cabinet when spraying; Kinked or snagging hose; Low flow only at the sprayer.
Hose Weight
A clamp-on weight on the hose under the sink that pulls the spray head back into the spout.
Signs it’s failing: Spray head won’t retract or hangs out of the spout; Weight slid down onto the cabinet floor.
Faucet Supply Lines
The two flexible hoses from the shutoffs up to the faucet.
Signs it’s failing: Drip at a nut; Kinked or bulging line.
Shutoff Valves
The hot and cold valves under the sink.
Signs it’s failing: Won’t shut off fully; Stem drips.
Basket Strainer
The drain in the sink bowl: a flange sealed with putty, a locknut underneath, and a removable basket that catches food.
Signs it’s failing: Leak right under the drain; Basket won’t seal to hold water; Rusted or pitted flange.
Kitchen Sink
Stainless or composite; drop-in or undermount; single or double bowl.
Signs it’s failing: Failed caulk or clip line; Dents, chips or cracks.
