Water Heater parts guide
Tank & Jacket
The glass-lined steel tank inside an insulated metal jacket. 40 and 50 gallon are the common sizes.
Signs it’s failing: Water seeping from the bottom seam; Rust on the jacket or around fittings; 10–12+ years old.
Anode Rod
A magnesium or aluminum rod that corrodes so the tank doesn’t. It screws into the top of the tank.
Signs it’s failing: Rotten-egg smell in the hot water; Rod worn down to the steel core; Rusty hot water.
Upper Heating Element
Heats the top of the tank first, so you get hot water quickly after a draw.
Signs it’s failing: No hot water at all; Lukewarm water only; Breaker trips.
Lower Heating Element
Does most of the heating. It sits in the bottom of the tank where sediment collects.
Signs it’s failing: Hot water runs out fast; Popping or rumbling; Leak around the element gasket.
Thermostats & Access Panels
Two thermostats behind the front panels switch power between the elements. The upper one has the red reset button.
Signs it’s failing: No hot water (reset button tripped); Water too hot; Water never gets hot.
T&P Relief Valve
A safety valve that opens if the tank gets too hot or the pressure too high. It keeps the tank from bursting.
Signs it’s failing: Drips or runs out the discharge pipe; Won’t reseat after testing; Crusted or corroded.
Discharge Pipe
Carries water from the T&P valve down to within 6" of the floor or out to a drain.
Signs it’s failing: Water at the end of the pipe; Missing or too short; Cracked.
Drain Valve
The hose-thread valve at the bottom front, used to flush sediment and drain the tank.
Signs it’s failing: Drips from the spout; Clogged with sediment; Cracked plastic valve.
Dip Tube
A plastic tube under the cold inlet that sends incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank.
Signs it’s failing: Hot water runs out fast; Lukewarm water; White plastic bits in faucet aerators.
Water Heater Connectors
The flexible hot and cold lines from the house piping to the top of the tank.
Signs it’s failing: Drip at a nut; Corroded or green fittings; Kinked line.
Cold Shutoff Valve
The valve on the cold line feeding the tank. Close it before any repair.
Signs it’s failing: Won’t shut off fully; Drips at the handle.
Thermal Expansion Tank
A small tank on the cold line that absorbs the water that expands as it heats.
Signs it’s failing: T&P valve drips after the heater runs; Tank sounds full of water when tapped; Rust at the seam.
Drain Pan
The pan the heater sits in, piped to a drain, so a leak doesn’t ruin the floor or ceiling below.
Signs it’s failing: Water in the pan; Cracked pan; No pan under a closet or attic heater.
