Ceiling Fan parts guide

Fan-Rated Ceiling Box & Brace

The metal or heavy plastic box in the ceiling that carries the fan’s weight, usually hung from a brace that spans two joists.

Signs it’s failing: Fan wobbles no matter how well the blades are balanced; Box moves when you push on the fan; Box is a light-only box (not marked for fans).

Mounting Bracket

The steel plate screwed to the ceiling box. The downrod ball sits in its cradle so the fan can self-level.

Signs it’s failing: Fan wobbles or tilts; Clunk when the fan starts; Loose screws at the box.

Downrod

The pipe the fan hangs from. Its length sets how far the blades sit below the ceiling.

Signs it’s failing: Fan wobbles (bent rod or loose pin); Blades too close to the ceiling or too low; Missing cross pin or clip.

Canopy

The cover that slides up the downrod and hides the bracket, wiring and (often) the remote receiver.

Signs it’s failing: Rattles or hums; Hangs below the ceiling; Cracked or missing screws.

Motor & Housing

The motor that spins the blades, inside the decorative housing. The reverse switch is usually on the side.

Signs it’s failing: Hums but won’t spin after the capacitor checks out; Burning smell; Grinding from worn bearings.

Fan Blades

The paddles that move the air. A set is weight-matched at the factory.

Signs it’s failing: Wobble; Warped or drooping blade; Cracked or peeling finish.

Blade Irons

The metal arms that bolt the blades to the motor.

Signs it’s failing: Wobble or one blade sits lower than the others; Clicking as the fan turns; Cracked arm.

Switch Housing

The cup under the motor that holds the speed switch and capacitor, with the light kit attached below.

Signs it’s failing: Rattles; Loose or missing screws; Light kit hangs crooked.

Light Kit

The light fixture under the fan: the fitter, sockets and glass globe or bowl.

Signs it’s failing: Light flickers or won’t come on with good bulbs; Scorched socket; Broken glass.

Light Bulbs

Most fans take medium (E26) or candelabra (E12) bulbs. Check the base before you buy.

Signs it’s failing: Light out; Flickers or dims; Bulbs burn out fast (heat or shaking).

Pull Chain Switch

The chain switches that cycle the fan speeds and turn the light on and off.

Signs it’s failing: Chain broke off or pulled out; Stuck on one speed; Clicks but nothing changes.

Remote & Receiver

The handheld remote and the receiver module, usually tucked into the canopy, that switches the fan and light.

Signs it’s failing: Fan and light ignore the remote; Works only at close range; Fan turns on or changes by itself.

Capacitor

The small box in the switch housing that starts the motor and sets the speeds.

Signs it’s failing: Runs slow on every speed; Only one speed works; Hums but won’t start, spins if you push it.
